SPAD arrays and cameras: a comparison with conventional image sensors and detectors

This talk will introduce single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays and cameras, highlighting how they differ from conventional imaging and photon-counting technologies. We will review the state-of-the-art in SPAD devices and compare their performance with established detectors such as photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), EMCCD cameras, as well as modern sCMOS and qCMOS image sensors. The discussion will focus on their working principles and on when SPAD-based systems provide unique advantages versus when conventional solutions may be more appropriate, depending on the application.

Milo Wu, PhD, Business Development Manager PI Imaging
Milo (MingLo) Wu, PhD, obtained his BSc in Nanoelectronics from National Chiao Tung University, his MSc in Nanodevices and Physics from KU Leuven, and his PhD at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), where he focused on the application of SPAD in various fields. During his doctoral research, he contributed to the development of SPAD-based systems and co-authored several highly cited scientific publications. Today, as Business Development Manager at Pi Imaging Technology, Dr. Wu helps customers explore the potential of SPADs and supports their integration into existing technologies, bridging the gap between advanced detectors and practical applications

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
