We are pleased to announce and invite you to one of our weekly online zoom events.
Architectural Advances in On-Chip Computation for Embedded SPAD Sensors
Recent advances in Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) sensor technology have made it possible to integrate computational functions directly onto the sensor chip itself. By embedding processing units and memory alongside SPAD arrays, tasks such as photon timing, data reduction, and real-time signal analysis can be executed on-chip, drastically reducing latency and off-chip data bandwidth. These architectural improvements are particularly advantageous for applications requiring fast and efficient photon detection, including time-of-flight imaging, dynamic light scattering, and biomolecular sensing. Key design approaches, such as in-pixel processing, macropixel data aggregation, and specialized parallel pipelines, enhance the capability and efficiency of embedded SPAD systems, opening new possibilities for compact, low-power, and real-time photonic devices.
Speaker
Andrei Ardelan, CTO Novoviz
Andrei Ardelean (CTO) obtained his BSc in Applied Electronics from The Polytechnic University of TimiÈ™oara (UPT) in 2015, an MSc in Microelectronics from Delft University of Technology (TUDelft) in 2017, and a PhD from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2023. In 2016, during his Master’s studies, he interned at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He was a postdoctoral researcher at EPFL's Advanced Quantum Architecture Laboratory (AQUA) in 2023. While at EPFL, he has made significant contributions to the design and testing of the first 1-megapixel SPAD camera and developed the first fully-reconfigurable SPAD processing array. He now serves as the founder and CTO of NovoViz
Moderator
Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, former Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
