Lunch Chat: Photonics at METAS

METAS is the Swiss Federal Government's competence center for all questions relating to measurement, measuring equipment and measuring methods. The Photonics, Time and Frequency laboratory is active since more than 30 years in the metrology of fibre optics and of photonics components and measuring instruments. Our services address all relevant quantities in this field, like optical power and linearity, spatially resolved reflectance and loss measurements, wavelength and optical frequencies, waveguide properties, like dispersion, mode field diameter and polarisation dependant quantities.

In this presentation we will focus on the spectral characterisation of active and passive photonics components. The measurement system, based on a supercontinuum laser combined with a two-stage tunable filter, is continuously tunable in a spectral range spanning from 700 nm to 1800 nm with a spatial resolution better than 2 nm. Application fields of this versatile system range from telecommunication to sensors and to rapidly growing domains like quantum communication and photonics integrated circuits.

Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
