Enhancing robustness in meta lens design

This talk will center on the concept of meta lens design and the methods to enhance its robustness. Meta lenses have gained significant attention due to their ability to manipulate light at subwavelength scales, enabling a wide range of applications including imaging, sensing, and communication. However, the performance of meta lenses can be sensitive to variations in fabrication, environmental conditions, and incident light properties.

We will delve into strategies for improving the robustness of meta lens designs, including the use of optimization algorithms. Additionally, we will explore the impact of these strategies on the final meta lens through a specific example.

By addressing these challenges, we aim to pave the way for the practical implementation of meta lenses in real-world scenarios where reliability and stability are crucial.

Speaker

Dominik Schulz, Optical Design Engineer at Photonics Precision Engineering GmbH
Dominik Schulz previously worked as a Research Assistant at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg pursuing his PhD in physics. His research focused on investigating and deriving simulation methodology for electromagnetic phenomena in non-trivial media and structures, as well as setting up high-end numerical infrastructure for solving the resulting numerical challenges. The physical topics included, e.g., scattering behavior in magnonic, optical, and quantum mechanical systems, modification of vortex fields, and THz applications in metamaterials. Following his studies, he joined PPE as an Optical Design Engineer specializing in wave optical applications such as DOEs, HOEs, and metasurfaces, where he solves tasks ranging from investigation, design, to tolerancing.

Moderator

Dr. Christian Bosshard, Managing Director Swissphotonics
Dr. Christian Bosshard received his degree in Physics (1986) and his doctorate (1991, Silver medal award) from ETH. From 2001-2021 he was working at CSEM, first as Section Head and then as Vice President and Head Photonics. Since 2013 he is Managing Director of Swissphotonics. Christian is a Fellow of Optica, Board Member of EPIC, and Member of the Board of the University of Basel.
